Interactive Projection

A large projection fills a gallery wall: snowy rock and water overlaid with glowing patterned forms in green and orange.

[ Description ]

Aurora Indigenus is a looping single-channel projection made during my 2024 residency at the Banff Centre. I photographed and 3D-scanned sites around Banff, Johnston Canyon and the Bow River among them, then ran them through a machine learning model trained on Woodland imagery. The land comes back as an aurora: rock, snow and water filled with ancestral forms that drift and change colour.

Ojibwe animism holds that the land is alive and carries spirit. I treat the model as a collaborator in that conversation. The projection showed in Earth Slant at the Banff Centre's Project Space. XR-activated prints of the sites, including Ziibi, hang in Hyper Woodland at the Thunder Bay Art Gallery in 2026.
